I asked a question on my Instagram a couple of days ago about the six fan arts challenge requesting suggestions for characters, and someone’s reply was the question “who knows you the best?” Now I think they saw the question box and assumed I wanted people to ask me questions, but I ran with it and I replied that it just has to be my best friend. There are some things that you just can’t talk about with most people, but with Katie there is nothing I’d feel uncomfortable talking about, we share everything, and honestly she’s the best person I know.
So I decided that I would illustrate some fan art of Katie. I took to her Facebook in search of a good reference photo and I came across one of my favourite photos of her sat atop a giant lobster statue. How could I not? Now I don’t draw people, at least not their faces, so I was very apprehensive and I didn’t tell anyone I was doing this drawing just in case I created a monster. It turns out the style I’ve been doing my animal illustrations in transfers pretty well across to humans too, go figure. It took a hell of a lot of patience to colour and shade the giant lobster, and to hand speckle her leopard print coat, but eventually I finished the piece. All that was left was to create a background, and then I discovered some amazing brushes on Procreate and this is what I ended up with…
After I finished I sent it to her and she immediately made it her profile picture everywhere and gleefully shared it with her friends. I was just happy she liked it. From sharing my drawing I was asked to draw someone else so I’ve started that and I can’t wait to share it with you, but it really showed how vital shares can be to grow an audience as an artist. I’ve really been enjoying the art I’ve been creating recently, and it makes me so happy that people are enjoying it. It’s a slow process for sure, but I have faith in it.
I can’t wait to share more of my work over the coming days and weeks, and I hope you’re all enjoying seeing it. If you’d like a custom space portrait I’m offering them over on my Big Cartel store, or you can email me directly at email@example.com. I will be requiring payment upfront as I’ve had some issues with starting commissions, spending hours on them giving myself awful headaches only for people to avoid payment, which I expect most rational people will understand and empathise with!
Thank you so much again for stopping by, your support means everything. I hope you’re all keeping safe. I’ll see you in the next one.
