Anxiety

If a fish comes to the surface and appears to be gasping for breath it’s likely because of a lack of dissolved oxygen in their water. Coming to the surface is where they’ll find the next best concentration of dissolved oxygen. This little fact inspired today’s piece…

I’m not a huge fan of the outside world, and at first I thought this lockdown would be a piece of cake. A few years ago when I was mentally in a terrible place I didn’t leave my home for months, save maybe walking with my ex to the shops, but those trips took a lot out of me. I figured if I managed that, being comparatively okay mentally now this would be easy. However, even though I know that if I had somewhere to go it’d have me feeling all kinds of anxious, knowing that I can’t even if I wanted to has me feeling like a fish in a warm bowl of water desperately searching for oxygen. What little escape I can find isn’t enough, it’s just a temporary fix.

I’m sure we’re all feeling it to some extent, but if we can come together to power through this it’ll be over far sooner than if we give into the desire to be free and with others. It isn’t easy, it won’t be easy, and it won’t get any easier, but it’s what we have to do. For the sake of the vulnerable, those out on the frontlines, and for our futures, we need to stay inside and keep this thing contained.

Stay safe and I’ll see you in the next one.
